How to have eternal life
Bread and Water Part Four
Facing the Battle
Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim (Exodus 17:8)
Israel had just experienced yet another miracle from God. We have seen many of them such as the parting of the Red Sea, Manna from heaven and the water from the rock. Even before Israel left Egypt, we saw one of the most important miracles in the Old Testament. It was the most important prelude to Jesus Christ before HE came. This was the Passover in which an unblemished lamb was used to put blood on the door post so that the death angel would "pass over" that house. If the blood was not applied, the first born in that house would die. (Exodus 11)
If we look carefully, every time we see God perform a miracle, we will also see that God's people would soon face yet another battle. Each of the plaques in Egypt was intended to open Pharaoh's eyes so that he would let Israel go. Although Moses had only asked for a few days to go worship God, (Ex:5:1) as Pharaoh increased the burden on Israel, Moses also under the direction of God increased the demands. Although scripture tells us that God hardened Pharaoh's heart, I believe we can see this just as we hear today when someone says: "You made me angry" Egypt had gotten use to the easy life provided by the labor the people of Israel were doing. They did not want to do what was right just as many of us today do not want to listen to what God is telling us so we harden our hearts against His Truth. It was God's demands though Moses to let Israel go that caused Pharaoh to rebel more and more against God.
A short time after Moses had smitten the rock and saw water flow freely, we find this in Exodus 17:8 "Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim"
Who as Amalek? He was the grandson of Esau. Esau was the son of Isaac and the brother of Jacob. You may remember him best as the one who sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. Esau lived for pleasure and had no regard for God. If he had we would hear that God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Esau instead of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Many nations wanted to attack Israel but they did not dare. They had heard about the ten plaques in Egypt and the Red Sea and they feared the God of Israel.
Amalek did not believe in any god. He was an atheist.
Atheism is worse than idol worship. Idol worship is polytheism, the belief in many powers. It is possible to progress from many gods to belief in one God. The prime example is Abraham. Originally an idol worshipper, he eventually came to the knowledge that there can be only one true Power. The road from many powers to one power is relatively short, since the individual accepts in principle that there is something directing the universe.
However, Amalek denies that any power runs the world. It's all blind, accidental, happenstance. As Rabbi Tzaddok says, they believe in nothing. From this position, it is most difficult to accept the Almighty God.
Amalek had a vested interest in attacking the Jewish people, whose very existence proved the existence of God to the world. (1)
When Amalek fought against Israel, Moses stood on top of a hill along with Aaron and Hur. Moses lifted his hand toward heaven and as long as his hands were uplifted, Israel prevailed. When he lowered his arms, the enemy started wining. Aaron and Hur realized this and they had Moses sit on a rock and they helped hold his arms up until Amalek was defeated.
It is here that God reveals Himself as Jehohvah-nissi which means the Lord our banner. It is also here that the LORD said we will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
There are many things we can learn from this. One of the most important is that Esau missed out on one of the biggest blessing that any human could have. Instead of being the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, his name would have been there instead of Jacob's.
My friend, if we, you and I do not listen to God and obey His commands, HE could easily pass us by and use someone else. If we ignore the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, we too could very will miss out on seeing God work through us and we too could well see our children and grand children turn from God and become HIS enemy. Let's not allow the pleasure of sin for a season keep us from following HIM! (2)
We also learn that NO ENEMY is a match for GOD. Moses defeated Amalek sitting down as long as he did it God's way.
Yes we will have battles throughout our walk with the LORD but look at what we are told in Romans 6:14
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Sin will not control us. It can not control us. It was defeated for all time and eternity 2,000 years ago on Mount Calvary when THE ROCK was smitten and out of this ROCK flowed the living waters.
I know there are many who although they know it, have not really accepted this yet. Many think they have to still punish themselves for sin. Many have asked "how can I get victory over (place the sin YOU have problems with here) The fact is that you can not get victory over it....it has already been defeated and you simply need to accept that fact of the Gospel.
Lift your hands to the LORD in praise to HIS name. I firmly believe praise is the key to answered prayer, victory in everyday living and then we need to change the way we think. Praise got Jonah out of the " whale" and Paul and Silas out of the jail. (3)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1,2) (4)
When we do not accept God's grace and we keep thinking we need to punish ourselves we are letting the spirit of Amalek deceive us. We are falling for the mindset of those who do not believe in a personal loving God who cares about every little detail of our life. (5) Remember also that we do not go by feeling. Yes as a child of God there are times we will feel His presences so close that we will never want to leave that place. BUT... there are also times in which we wonder if GOD is there, if HE does care. He has not left us. He promised never to leave us or forsake us. He is there even if we can not feel it.
Remember that in the poem: "Foot Prints" when there was only one set of footprints, the child was not left alone, he was being carried.
We are told that satan goes around like a roaring lion seeking who he can defeat. Lions only go after the weak, the young or the defenseless. Let's look at some key principals in our battle with Amalek.
1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt
3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them; 4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
In heavenly armour we'll enter the land The battle belongs to the Lord No weapon that's fashioned against us shall stand The battle belongs to the Lord We sing glory and honor Power and strength to the Lord (repeat) The power of darkness comes in like a flood The battle belongs to the Lord He's raised up a standard, the power of His blood The battle belongs to the Lord When your enemy presses in hard do not fear The battle belongs to the Lord Take courage my friend, your redemption is near The battle belongs to the Lord
Remember, if GOD is powerful enough to save us from satan, HE is also powerful enough to keep us! He is the LORD who brought us out of the miry clay and HE has placed us on the solid ROCK to stay.
Remember the battle cry David used to bring down a giant.
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 1 Samuel 17:45
Remember too that our battle is not with an abusive husband, wife or person nor is it with family courts, Congress, or even the gender feminist or masculist.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12
We are to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might and we put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
My friend this is so important that there is no way we can just cover this in a few sentences so we will will discuss this in part five...BATTLE GEAR!
Before we conclude, I want to take a moment to talk to those who do not have the foggiest idea of what we are talking about. You may be like Amalek and think that there is no GOD. Please, Please realize that just because we do not believe something, that does not mean it can not happen. If something is true, we can deny it all we want but the truth still remains. The truth I so much want to convey to you right now is that GOD does indeed LOVE you. Oh you can deny He exists, You can mock Him and turn away from Him as you may well have done so many other times in the past but right now my friend...right now, HE Is still calling you. The very fact that you are reading this now proves it beyond a doubt and right now as I said in Bread and Water part one, the people could have chosen to trample the manna sent by God under their feet, and died in that wilderness or they could kneel down and receive it.. There is no way I can say it better then I did in part one so here it is again:
If you reject the Light of the world, the Bible says you are on your way to eternal darkness, darkness so black you can feel it!
Hebrews 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy,
who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
My friend, if you do not know the peace and joy that only Jesus can give, right now, you are either going to stoop down and receive this manna, this bread of live, or you are going to trodden it under your feet.
Throughout his adult ministry, Jesus showed that His humility continued. He washed the feet of the apostles. He reached out to those the world rejected. He is still doing it today. I well remember the night He reached down to a nobody like ME! Then....HE made me SOMEBODY! He made me a child of the King...but not just any king, but the KING OF KINGS!
JESUS is calling YOU right now my friend. He is only a whisper away but please also realize that He said His spirit will not always call us. This could be your last chance to find the peace and joy that ONLY Jesus can give...HIS love is STILL REACHING.....
His love went on longing, His love went on reaching right pass the shackles of my mind and the words of the Father became Mary's little son
And His love reached all the way to where I was And so this great Creator who'd been reaching all along This God who formed the world with His own hand Made love become a baby One of our very own And spoke His word so we could understand
His love went on longing His love went on reaching right pass the shackles of my mind and the words of the Father became Mary's little son And His love reached all the way to where I was
Reaching....longing.......loving and searching and the longing and the reaching became Mary's little son and His love reached all the way to where I was
Many people know ABOUT God but to have a relationship with Him, we have to KNOW Him. What is the difference?
Knowing about God can include us being aware of all the facts concerning Him. Many people think that knowing that Jesus Christ died for our sin is all that is needed for salvation. It is NOT! In order to have salvation that is to have eternal life there are a few basic steps we need to follow. This is so important I want to go over them,
1: We need to realize we have sinned. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God This means we have failed to met the goal of being perfect in order to enter heaven. Few of us would question this.
2: The penalty for the sin that we are guilty of is death. Romans 6:23 tells us The wages of sin is death. (Death is separation. When our body dies, our soul is separated from our body. Eternal death is when we die without doing what is being explained here and then our spirit is separated from God for eternity.
Since the only price we can pay for our own sin is to be separated from God forever, it stands to reason that there is no way we can pay for our sin ourselves. We thus come to the 2nd part of Romans 6:23: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Lord.
3: 2nd Corinthians 5:21 informs us: For he hath made him, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Jesus Christ, God's only Son became sin for us so that we can be freed from the penalty of sin. What then do we need to do?
4: For GOD so loved the world that HE gave His only begotten Son that whosoever (read YOUR name here) believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Please note the ONLY condition given is that we believe in Jesus Christ for full payment for our sin.
5: Many times our own
past activities or the activities of our ancestors may be a basis for demonic
problems based on Exodus 20:5. It is important therefore to Renounce
the sins of our ancestors.
Now if we only learn these facts, even though we may understand that they are true and believe them. that is only knowing ABOUT GOD. How do we KNOW HIM then? It is APPLYING that payment to our account.
This would be like having a check to pay a bill and putting the check on a desk. The bill does not get paid because the check was never APPLIED to your account. Once we know and believe the facts pointed out above, the next step is to TALK to God much as you and I would and admit that we have fallen short of what He wants.
We recognize that we deserve to be separated from a Holy God. We then tell Him that we know that He has provided a payment for all our sin and this payment was Jesus Christ when He died on a cross.
It is at this time we ask God to APPLY THIS PAYMENT TO OUR ACCOUNT. We ask God to credit as PAYMENT IN FULL for all our sin the price Jesus paid for us. It is this step that gives us eternal life. If we do all but this step, we know about God.
When we do this step, we will KNOW God and we will have eternal life. Following is a model of a prayer to trust Christ.
Lord God, I now realize I am a sinner. I realize I have fallen short of the goal You have set forth for eternal life and I now repent of this sin. I also understand that according to Your Word, the Bible, that Your Son, Jesus Christ as paid the debt for me and I am now asking You to credit the payment Jesus made on the cross to my sin. Lord God, I also renounce any sin on the part of my ancestors that may have been invitations to curses or demonic activity. Lord God I also now understand that You have now given me eternal life and I thank You for that fact. Amen.
